Coconut Conundrums

Among the many delightful happenings yesterday, a local organic produce company delivered to us several thousands of pounds of:

ORGANIC, NON-IRRADITED YOUNG MEXICAN COCONUTS.

You heard it right. FREE!! Every once in a while this company brings the Tree deliveries of their produce. They usually bring a huge amount of produce which is all 'compost', or stuff they 'can't sell'. However, almost all of it is usually great, some of it is 'non-sellable' simply because of topical blemishes which might inhibit the aesthetic appeal of the produce, but are really great inside. Usually we get a huge truckload of various citrus, and sometimes various other fruits, such as mangoes or melons, but this time it was COCONUTS!!! We sort the good stuff out, and the community at the TOL and the local town community can have some, and we compost whatever isn't so good.

Sooo, we have a whole trunkload of coconuts right now :D I just had to put this great picture of my friend Frank, a Live Food Instructor here at the Tree, and his abundance of coconuts!

Wow, what a WONDERFULLY delightful and adventurous weekend it has been. On Saturday we discovered 'Arizona Chia', a raw, organic chia seed store just 13 miles down the road in the nearby town of Sonoita! Who knew!?

If you're not familiar with the amazing power of chia seeds, let me introduce you...

Originating in Mexico and Guatamala, chia seeds are the richest plant source of omega-3 fatty acids known and contains natural antioxidants and fiber. I've found them to be super at satisfying hunger. People use them for all sorts of things, but I've seen them primarily as 'chia porridge', and also in raw pizza crusts and smoothies.

So some people have asked me exactly how much greens, fruit, and fat I eat every day and what those sources have been.

I would be happy to give you some detail :)

You might find this interesting, but what is feeling great for my body right now (always do what is best for YOUR body)is to eat a salad for breakfast, lunch, and usually dinner as well. Since the juice feast, I just can't get enough greens. So, usually a salad at both breakfast and lunch consists of a big bowl of greens, sprouts, cucumber and celery. On this I simply put a bunch of spirulina powder and perhaps a tablespoon of oil (hemp or olive), and that's it!

Soo, lots of greens, and protein from the spirulina. I get at about a pound of greens in per day.

I have not been eating much fruit - I rarely feel drawn to fruit. Occasionally I've had an apple or an orange, but it's not daily for me - I don't really think about it. I don't eat agave or yacon, and rarely eat honey, so sweeteners aren't really a draw of mine either. In fact, agave in particular really wigs me out. I occasionally have coconut water, which is a sweet item, but not regularly. Sweets aren't really primary in my diet, and it feels best for me that way - at least right now.

As far as fat, my primary fat is the oil I put on my salads. I occasionally eat some raw chocolate or some sort of dessert from the Tree of Life, but my body needs very little fat. I haven't really had nuts and seeds at all since the juice feast, and haven't had any raw nut mylk, which the Tree makes every day. This is rather an accomplishment for me, because I used to be rather addicted to the nut mylks :)

Enjoy the rest of your 2008, I love you all!

Raw For Life DVD and Assorted Ramblings

Tonight we watched the new 'Raw For Life' DVD. This DVD was made by the people who are bringing us the 'Raw For 30 Days' documentary, which will be coming out in 2008. However, this 'Raw For Life' DVD is a great compilation of information, interviews and recipes. I am so, SO impressed by it. I think this is the best presentation to the raw foods lifestyle that has been put together in the raw food movement by anyone so far.

I really loved the interviews in particular - everyone from Rev. Michael Beckwith (whose work I absolutely love), Tony Robbins, Morgan Spurlock (Super Size Me), Gabriel Cousens, M.D., David Wolfe, Bruce Lipton, Ph.D., Gary Null Ph.D., and Woody Harrelson, and many more.

We even have a few wonderful raw recipes demonstrated by some of my good friends, the Head Chefs here at the Tree of Life Cafe!

I highly recommend this DVD, and it is an AWESOME introduction of this movement to newbies. I feel like I want to order 50 of them and send them off :) Visit the website at www.rawforlifedvd.com

So I am about halfway through this parasite cleanse I am doing from Healthforce Nutritionals. I'm not quite sure what sort of signs are indicative of a successful parasite cleanse, but I feel like there is something going on, and my bowel movements have increased substantially. I'll keep you updated.

My main focus right now is developing a regular exercise, body movement practice. Unless it is swimming, I tend to tire of the same activity if done too regularly, and prefer to exercise with great variety. Thus far, I've been doing some running, some hiking, dancing, rebounding, interval training, weights, yoga, etc.

However, my new favorite thing to do is to run up this huge, steep hill on the TOL property between the office buildings and the cafe. If one is to run it, it takes about 10 mintues to get from building to building, but this hill is super steep on parts and it leaves me absolutely panting. Love it :)

Our spirulina kick is still going strong... going to need to buy a third bottle tomorrow... this is a LOT of spirulina man... A few of you have asked me exactly what we put in our spirulina salads.. Any ratio or amount of greens or sprouts, and I will put in cabbage and/or seaweed if I have it (love it), and you can also put in things like chopped cucumber or zucchini, tomatoes or celery. It varies for us each salad. When you have the chosen salad, we just put a small amount of oil (hemp or olive, depending what we have), a bit of salt and pepper, and I like cayenne on mine, Thim likes a bit of ground flax seed on his. YUM!

Hope you are all enjoying the last few days (!!!) of 2007!

Merry Holiday Musings

A spectacular Christmas season it was for me, how about you?

Christmas Eve found us enjoying another warm sunny day during which time sunbathing was again at hand. Evening meditation was wonderful and rejuvenitive, with Dr. Cousens ending the meditation by saying,'Shalom shalom shalom, shant shanti shanti... HO HO HO!' (Get it - Santa?) You have to appreciate that man's sense of humor.

The evening found us at the hot tub under a nearly full moon and finished with watching 3:10 to Yuma, a great cowboy movie taking place right here in Arizona.

Christmas day was wonderful as well. The Tree of Life is open all days of the year, so we were happily enjoying a quite but productive Christmas day, raw tacos were served for lunch at the Tree of Life Cafe - what a great Christmas lunch, eh? However, I had my spirulina salad, which I have had for breakfast, lunch and dinner every day for almost a week now.

Last evening we attended the evening meditation services once again, this night we meditated as we do every night, for about 40 minutes, and then moved into 'Spiritual Satsang' with Gabriel (Dr. Cousens). Very interesting questions asked about attachment, ego, the importance of developing character, kundalini awakenings, all with equally intriguing answers, as is always the case with Gabriel.

We then headed down to a grand Tree of Life holiday feast and gift exchange. Gabriel did a blessing, and we feasted like kings and queens with gratitude beyond belief. Everything from raw hummus to raw chocolate, it was delish.

The gift exchange was next, the one where you can steal other people's gifts :) I don't know what the name for it was. We scored twenty foot huge Tibetan prayer flags, which we cleverly protected from theivery with a disposition of dullness as the dramatic stealing game went on.

And now on to a very interesting thing that is happening for Thim and I which I would quite like to share.

Remember my saying that I craved spirulina salad very frequently on my juice feast? Well, since I've been able to return to food, I've been eating almost exclusively that. Sprouts, greens, lots of spirulina, and a small amount of oil.

Thim (who is equally as enthusiastic about spirulina salads as I am) and I have gone through an entire bottle of HealthForce Nutritionals Spirulina in three days.

THREE DAYS.

I can't get enough of it. I don't want anything else. I would rather eat it than raw chocolate or anything else you could put in front of me. And oh, people have. We've had raw tacos and raw pizza and anything you could think of in between, desserts, whatever...

And still, all I eat is spirulina salad...

Spirulina Fanaticism

Christmas here in southern Arizona is a rather interesting one - I've always lived places that most definitely have snow this time of year, always the ideal postcard 'Winter Wonderland'. This year, as well as last year, I've gotten to experience a desert winter, and I must say I am falling more and more in love with it. I ate my spirulina salad lunch on the sundeck today in my skirt and tshirt and the sun was oh so warm and the weather oh so perfect. Sometimes I don't know if I'll ever be able to live in a place that gets cold and/or cloudy....

I've been doing the parasite cleanse from HealthForce Nutritionals. It's about an 18 day cleanse and today is only day 5. Haven't noticed anything substantial yet, but we'll see. Who knows, maybe I don't have parasites :P Unlikely, considering my dietary history.

I just love spirulina. It has become an absolute staple for me, and I just can't get enough of it - my taste buds are bonkers for it. You don't even know how many times I've turned down raw chocolate over the opportunity to have spirulina and sprouts. Maybe a craving for protein? Chlorphyll? I don't know, but I'm loving it. Sea veggies feel phenomenal as well.

I've maintained exercise and definitely feel like the juice feast has somehow awakened both my desire and ability to gain a lot from physical activity. Flexibility is an important priority for me right now as well.

A few questions from readers:

I notice a lot of raw foodists mentioning they find it's best to eat fruit separately from other foods, however, I also notice that the same people juice fruits and veggies together. Is it different in juice or they're not noticing the contradiction? I'm not as hung up on the 'rules' as I might sound, but just happy to have somewhere to ask these questions as I get further into raw.

Hi there. You know, I'm actually laughing in response to this question becuase I'm bewildered at the fact that I've never thought about that before you asked :) Truly, I'm not sure why I feel this way, but for me, there is something about the juice of greens and the juice of fruit that seems to be less mild when digested in combination than when the whole foods are combined. That's as far as I can really explain it - just do what feels right for your body.

What has your sleep schedule been like lately? Some people give me crap for sleeping so little...thinking that we need more. They just dont know though.

I slept less during the juice feast and am continuing to sleep less now. I would say I sleep on average 7 hours per night, which seems to be a good set point for me. I have never had sleeping trouble - I can fall asleep very easily and quickly whether I go to bed at 8:30 pm or I go to bed at 11:30 pm. Interestingly, despite my ability to easily fall asleep, I am not necessarily tired in the way people talk about being fatigued or wiped out - I am just a bit sleepy. Fatigue is truly not a part of my life experience anymore.

Merry Christmas to all, happy celebrations to those who do! My gratitude and love with you always.

Exhuberant Excitements

So how has it been, since breaking my juice feast a week ago? Very interesting. Still melancholy about food - enjoying it but missing juice feasting as well. My digestion is still quite slow, but picking up.

I've basically been eating just salads - sprouts and greens, with spirulina, a few times a day, plus a few peices of fruit and some green juice. That's been about the extent, and it feels good! I love love love spirulina!

Since returning to food, I've sort of entered a new phase of emotional and spiritual work that feels very good. I've been very drawn to meditate regularly since returning to food, which is an interesting observation, as I did not feel I needed or really wanted to meditate regularly during the feast. I've also been journaling a great deal - something I've really done all my life, but seems increasingly important for me to work things out. There's something about writing and working things out on paper which has always been powerful for me.

I intended to juice feast today, just for a day, but upon making my first juice I broke my nut mylk bag, so apparently it wasn't supposed to happen today. Perhaps in a few days.

Crazy to think its Christmas eve tomorrow - barely even notice anything Christmas-y here in southern AZ :) I sunbathed today! Not to tease anyone!

Supplement Irradiation, Post Juice Feast Digestion, Lifestyle Integration

The FDA is now moving to irradiation of all supplements unless YOU vote NOW against it. The Citizens for Health, joined with the American Herbal Products Association (AHPA) are opposing a petition filed with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to allow the use of ionizing radiation on dietary supplements and dietary ingredients. In case you're not familiar, this is VERY MUCH NOT WHAT WE WANT. Please vote by clicking HERE.

So I've had a bit of sprouts with spirulina and they are SO yummy and fulfilling. I'm having some discomfort due to my digestion being slower than I expected it to, so I'm having to be really careful about what and how much I eat. I'm hoping my digestion will normalize a bit - its slower than it was before I started feasting.

A new philosophy that has entered my life during the Juice Feast is the transition from an all or nothing point of view to a more integrated and balanced point of view. I know that's sort of vague, so let me explain.

In my perspective of anything from diet to exercise to projects, I've always seen them as huge, daunting tasks. Furthermore, I've historically had a bit of a competitive, high achiever sort of mentality. In regards to diet, I would eat poorly and then tell myself I'd fast for a week to neutralize the negative effects. Not the healthiest idea ever ;) When it has come to exercise, I remember the 3 hour a day training I used to do for so long, expect myself to do that kind of exercise again, and so never try to do anything at all because I just couldn't find that kind of time or inspiration to live up to my expectations. When it has come to projects, or things I need to get done, I've looked at the thing as a whole, a large, time consuming task, and so I wouldn't ever start on it.

During the juice feast I recognized this pattern of thinking I had for so many aspects of my life and worked to switch it over, repatterning myself. I was recognizing that I just wasn't getting anything done at all. So I started asking, 'What kind of habits and commitments can I make every day that I know I can keep?", "If I had to follow through with for an entire year, what kind of commitment is reasonable for me?" I let go of judgement of it being too little of a commitment, becuase anything was better than the nothing I was doing. So I decided I could exercise for 15 - 20 minutes every day. Nothing compared to what I used to do, but since removing the pressure, I've done this every day for the few weeks ago that I decided to. I have decided to make juice feasting one to two days a week an ongoing thing. Certain projects I've decided to take one action step per day, or simply work on that task for 10 mintues a day. The things I've listed in the last post as far as diet are also small things I can do every day to make a difference - because that's where the power is - daily habits, not irregular, 'kneejerk' actions that don't hold over the long term. It's so much more real, manageable, and productive to think this way and it actually gets results! Less talk, more walk :)

Eating Intentions

I've been clarifying priorities for myself as I transition back to the world of eating. Some of these regard specific decisions on what and how to eat and others are more about the mindset I am choosing to maintain surrounding food and drink. I'd like to list some of them!

*1 - 2 lbs of leafy greens per day, in the form of salads, soups, smoothies and juices.
The amazing amount of leafy greens I've listed as eating every day has become really clear to me during the juice feast. I see so many raw foodists who do way too many sweets and fats, and furthermore, have a difficulty cutting down on them. Just try taking in that many greens per day and I guarantee you'll crave less of the 'raw junk food'.

*Simplification - minimal complicated dishes with lots of ingredients
I got very into complicated meals before I started my juice feast - complicated entrees and breakfasts all the time. I was eating dishes with massive amounts of ingredients (although all raw, of course), and I felt VERY imbalanced.

*Minimal fat intake; primarily avocados and hemp fats, occasional nuts and seeds
My body does very well on a light diet with minimal fat. My ayurvedic constitution is pretty equal pitta/kapha and less vata. Thus, I totally thrive on a more cooling, light diet. Part of the reason juice feasting worked so well for me is due to my ayurvedic constitution. After the feast, I have very little interest in fats right now, which is truly a phenomenon for me because I was definitely attached to all raw fats before this feast

*Water upon waking every morning, drinking at least two liters of water per day
I've been so hydrated with the massive amounts of juices I've had on this feast, I want to make sure that I continue to hydrate myself with lots of water. I plan to eat a lot of water rich foods and so I may not need a whole lot of water, but I would like to commit to at least 2 liters, and definitely more on the days that I exercise.

*Fruit eaten alone
I'm definitely sensitive to food combinations now and fruit really feels best eaten alone.

*Minimal consumption of dehydrated food

It could change, but part of me almost feels like I could never go back to dehydrated food in large amounts. I feel like it might actually make me sick... wow.

*Increase consumption of wild and garden grown food

This has become a HUGE priority for me on the juice feast, both due to the intuitive attraction to this kind of food and also education on the increasing importance of our ability to eat sustainibly. I've been gathering some wild greens, such as lamb's quarter, chard and arugula. The last few days also been gathering a bunch of pecans, which grow around here, although almost no one seems to recognize they have the best pecans in the world right there for free. I am excited to try some of these pecans when I can and want to eat nuts.

*Finish eating by 7pm.

I feel this is very important to digestive health. I'd actually like to stop eating way before 7pm, but I put 7pm there because I eat light in the evening anyways.

*Supplement with MSM, medicinal mushrooms and green powders or algaes every day
These are my favorite supplements and are really important to me to continue taking regularly. I don't feel the need for a huge amount of supplements, but green powders like Pure Synergy and algaes like E3Live, spirulina and chlorella feel fantastic for my body. The medicinal mushroom powders - reishi, agaricus, coriolus and cordyceps - have totally taken me by storm. MSM has been my favorite supplement for years now, I totally notice a difference by taking it.

*Everything chewed extremely well such that it is nearly juice by the time it is swallowed
Chewing well has not historically been a strong point for me, but it is a huge priority for me now. Our stomach's don't have teeth.. our bodies are like huge juicers.

*Increasing amount of fermented and probiotic foods to at least a few times a week, ideally daily
I've been educating myself more on this as well, primarily by reading a bit from the philosophy of the Body Ecology diet, as well as other sources. I did a little fermented coconut water on the juice feast, and now I'd like to get into other fermented foods.

*Eating all meals very slowly to allow for satiation feeling to set in

If I recall correctly, it takes our system 20 - 25 minutes to register that it is satiated. To respect this, I want to eat small amounts slowly so that I don't overdo it and feel too full later on.

*Eating not to fullness but rather to satiation. This is very different, as most of us are used to eating until we are full
Rather than eating to total fullness, I am interested in actually maintaining a feeling of lightness and emptiness. Simply to calm the hunger sensation yet not feel the fullness sensation. This may mean smaller and more frequent meals, but it feels the best for me.

*Incorporate juice feasting as a regular practice in my life.
Juice Feasting has given me a huge sense of freedom and totally blasted apart any apprehension or fear of taking on fasts, feasts, or cleanses. I feel a lot of freedom to be able to juice a day or two here and there, do some shorter feasts of a week or so, and also simply juice every single day as part of my fuel.

*Being present with all food and really tasting it - minimizing eating while doing other things. Eating with absolute gratitude and love - eating as a meditation and sacred practice of intimacy
The meaning of food has totally changed for me on this feast. It is no longer another thing I do everyday because I always have, paying little attention to what it really means. Dr. Gabriel Cousens has always said, "Food is a love note from God." While this was beautiful, I never really felt it like I do now. What an amazing thing that we can have this incredibly intimate experience of a substance grown by the sun and the earth, experience it in the most sensual way - taste, touch, smell - take it INTO our bodies so that it literally becomes part of us, and gain energy to fuel these vehicles of light we call bodies. What a miracle. I have a new reverence for the act of eating and I want to eat and live with that gratitude and reverence. It feels almost dishonoring for me to consider eating while doing other activities, or not really paying attention to it. Perhaps I sound a little extreme about it now, but after all, I did just come off of two months without eating :)

Again, I want to really thank everyone who has been writing to me during the feast, who has been following me, and who has been telling me that they are inspired. That truly has been the biggest gift of this feast - to feel that my experience can be of service or inspiration to others. It has been so humbling to receive the words of love and support from people I don't even know personally.

With gratitude,

Courtney

Feast Breaking

Ahh yes, so how has it been breaking the feast? Interesting indeed.

First off, for information on Breaking the Juice Feast, please click here.

Prunes. Quite the interesting thing to have as one's first real meal. Soaking them for an entire night sure makes them nice and mushy and soggy. Delectible ;) But WOW, was I ever SO full after that first 8 oz. of soaked prunes! Had some lovely orange juice and green juice that day, which went down well. I also began taking a Parasite Cleanse today as well, I'm interested to see if I get anything substantial out with that, given my body is so clean now! I got a little excited about having greens and so had a little of them about a day earlier than I should have, and I felt like I had swallowed a brick :P They took a long time to digest and I'm taking it much easier now. It's easy to forget that you're feeling of digestive euphoria experienced during a feast won't last if you overload it too soon :) I am learning from experience that Feast breaking properly is so critically important. I urge anyone who embarks on a juice feast to absolutely plan to do the feast breaking protocol in full and proper manner. This morning I had a orange/blueberry/raspberry smoothie and was it WONDERFUL. Yummm.

I haven't been really recording what I've consumed for a few days, but I realize it would probably be helpful, so I shall commense doing so :)

Emotionally it's been interesting as well. I feel a little melancholy about returning to food. On one hand, I feel a little bit of the heightened, sustained joy I felt on the feast sort of leaving me and I almost want to return to juice to get it back. However, it really felt and feels right to break it now, and I know I want to start my next long Juice Feast very fresh, with new eyes and new intentions.

Another sensation I haven't had now for over two months is thirst! Now that I'm transitioning to other foods and drinking less juice, I'm finding myself thirsty! It occurred to me I never experienced thirst at all during the entire feast :)

A few questions from readers:

Courtney, I was wondering if the $10-$15 a day is just the produce or if it includes all of the supplements. If it doesn't, is there any idea of the total per day.

I am really interested and thinking about doing the global juice feast and I almost feel like I should start slowly purchasing supplements so I can afford it.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks so much!

The $10 - $15 is likely not going to include the supplements, although you may be able to get some supplements within that price range, depending on how much produce you need (i.e. someone who is drinking a bit over a gallon per day will have different cost breakdown than someone who is needed upwards of two gallons). Remember that the most important thing is the juice, and a juice feast can be done without supplements if needed. The supplements help to maximize the healing and nutrition that the body experiences. You could spend a fortune on supplements - perhaps upwards of a few hundred dollars per month, if you really wanted to, but again, don't underestimate the power of juices. It is a great idea to start purchasing supplements now!

Everyone I've seen juice feast seems to have a slightly different protocol in regards to supplements, so just find out what works for you and what your priorities are. The ones I used regularly were green powders, algaes, and MSM, and I occasionally used some Vitalzym.

Day 60 Juice Feast

AAAAAAAAAH DAY 60!! So I decided today that 60 feels good to me, and I'm actually looking forward to eating again. It's gone so fast and so slow at the same time... funny how that is. I'm just so pumped to have experienced such a marvelous tool for cleansing and healing that is so easy, enjoyable, and fun!

Today I had some green juice and a lot of watermelon juice, I was sort of all over the place today so I didn't record the exact amounts, but oh was it YUMMY!

A few questions from readers:

Hey Courtney...quick questions..Do you take Vitamineral green? I do and like it a lot, but i remember you mentioning the product Earth as well. Are these 2 meant to be taken together? I mean, not at the same time but in the same day? Also, do you know anything about Oxy-Mag? Love ya Courtney!!
Michelle

Hi Michelle, I don't take Vitamineral regularly, I tend to switch up my green powders all the time, but I love Vitamineral. Earth is also by Healthforce Nutrition, but they are different products altogether with different purposes. Jameth Sheridan, of Healthforce Nutritionals, said at Raw Spirit that these two products could be taken together and practically lived off of - they combine really well. I love both products, but they aren't substitutes for eachother.

I have never taken Oxy-Mag personally so I don't know what it's really like, but if I ever do, be sure to know that I'll post a little review on it!

Hi Courtney
Another question for you. What do you think about the birth control pill? I am interested in doing the Global Juice Feast and am thinking of getting off the pill around that time. Taking the pill is just starting to feel unnatural and almost going against the detoxifying and purifying that raw food and juice feasting brings up towards. What are you thoughts?

Hi there, great question, one that a lot of women are probably wondering! It would be a great thing to be able to cleanse your body with a juice feast from the effects of the pill. Just on intuition, it seems like it might be a good idea to come off of it even a little before the juice feast, so that you don't have to be taking on both the cleansing effects of the juice feast (although if you're doing it right you shouldn't have too many intense detox symptoms), and any detox that may come from getting off the pill.

I doubt the pill is really the best thing for our health, but then again, you have to do what you have to do and staying protectd is the most important. I'd encourage you to look into other alternative methods, as there are some good ones out there and some great combinations of different methods.

Day 59 Juice Feast

Today's Feast, in order of consumption:

32 oz. green juice w/ lemon, ginger, cayenne, turmeric and salt
3 TBS bee pollen
16 oz. green juice w/ lemon, ginger, cayenne, turmeric and salt
16 oz. green juice w/ lemon and ginger
Almost one whole watermelon's worth of watermelon juice :D

YUM watermelon juice! THAT was divine...

WOW Day 59 Juice Feast! What an interesting place to be. I'd always thought I'd do between 60 and 92 days... to think that if I choose to do 60 for this first juice feast then tomorrow is my LAST day of all juice! Tomorrow I'll feel whether I want to start breaking my feast or I want to go on, although I am leaning towards returning to solids. Having fun and taking it day by day. Part of me is actually feeling ecstatic about the idea of eating greens and sprouts, having felt like I've accomplished what I've set out to accomplish on this feast. I have no attraction whatsoever for nuts or dates or heavy foods, but ooooooooh some sprouts and spirulina? Drool. I am now a Juice Feast enthusiast to the moon, and will be doing a looooooot of juice feasting after this sixty or sixty plus day feast - anywhere from a day to a few weeks at a time. The end of this juice feast isn't somehow a conclusion or ending point for me at all, but rather, just a joyous continuation! However, it's been very interesting to observe the part of me that wants to go the full 92 days only because it knows I can, because other people have, and so it can prove its superiority and ability to 'go the distance', when the more centered part of me feels very good about my experience and accomplishments in 60 days and isn't taking it so seriously.

It is VERY interesting when we realize that we no longer have certain problems with our health anymore, yet we had almost forgotten we had it and didn't notice it healing. For example, I realized today that I have zero problem anymore with my eyesight. When I was about 16 I had to get glasses because I couldn't see the boards in school unless I was seriously squinting all the time. Without glasses, I had to sit close to the front and I just was squinting to look at or see everything far away. I had nearsightedness, obviously, and my vision was about 20/50, which isn't terrible, but it was enough that I needed glasses to drive legally and I needed them to see in school - I didn't wear them all the time, just when I felt like I needed them. I only wore them regularly for a bit less than two years, and then stopped wearing them altogether when I was about 18. It was this time I was getting into alternative medicine and natural living. I've now been vegan for about 2 and a half years, and all raw for a year, and on juice for two months. I realized today that my eyesight has completely healed because someone was asking me to read a sign far away that I never would have been able to read a few years ago. I NEVER squint anymore or have trouble seeing distant things. To test it, I actually found my old glasses and put them on. I haven't tried them on in easily a year or more. To my amazement, my glasses made almost no difference whatsoever in my quality of vision. I hadn't even thought about my sight for so long.

AMAZING!!

Another wonderful announcement we are very excited about:

Upon the end of this Juice Feast, I will be joining the selected team of Juice Feast Coaches along with David and Katrina Rainoshek of JuiceFeasting.com. Thim (who will also be available for coaching in the next few months) and I are working on a site coming soon, JuiceFeastNow.com. I will be available for coaching and consultations immediately, even before the site is up, including coaching for the Global Juice Feast 2008. Keep a lookout for the site launch!

Love always!

Day 58 Juice Feast

Whew, I'm having some very interesting back pain that has flared up again. I keep meaning to record it in my blog, but for the past 2 weeks or so, every day, I've had varying degrees of back pain and soreness in my lower back area. This is totally unheard of for me - back pain is never something I've experienced. It is likely my kidneys detoxing, so I'm just waiting it out and taking it as a sign that I might need to do some sort of kidney cleanse soon.

Today's Feast, in order of consumption:

1/2 tsp each of coriolus, agaricus, cordyceps and reishi in 1 cup water
32 oz. green juice w/ lemon, ginger, cayenne, turmeric and salt
2 TBS bee pollen
16 oz. green juice w/ lemon, ginger, cayenne, turmeric and salt
32 oz. orange/grapefruit juice
30 oz. orange/apple/grapefruit juice

We had the lovely experience tonight of spending some time with David and Katrina Rainoshek of juicefeasting.com. They are incredible people and we love them so much! We talked a lot about the importance of learning to grow your own food - the implications of the oil peak are likely to be nudging us in that direction in several ways. I'm planning on checking out some gardening books asap!

A question from a reader:

Hi Courtney, I have questions:
1. I'm wondering about the difference between juice feasting and eating raw in terms of greens. If two pounds of leafy greens and one head of celery need to be juiced every day for a balanced feast, how much is needed when eating raw? Or is it the same? Is that volume of juiced greens filling in for nutrients that I'd normally only get when eating raw and if so, what raw foods are they? I'm wondering because I was thinking I'd get maximum nutrients by juicing because I can drink much more greens than I can eat so perhaps I need the same volume either way? Hope this makes sense. As you can see, I'm new and a bit muddled still...
2. Do you combine your bee pollen with any of your juices or just take it on its own? I ask because I tried some yesterday and was a little startled by the taste....
Thanks again for your help and inspiration.

Very, very good question!! Eating one to two pounds of leafy greens per day is an excellent practice, one that I will be avidly adopting when I begin eating again. David and Katrina Rainoshek also advocate this chlorphyll rich regimen, and are writing a book which will come out soon on the subject called "Four Means to Get Your Greens". While I don't think it is necessary to eat a whole head of celery each day, I usually eat at least a few stalks of celery every day when I'm eating - celery is an incredible source of organic sodium and it is intuitive for my body to want it. You are right in that it may be true that you can get more of those greens and celery in via juicing them because you aren't taking in the volume of the pulp. Even when you are eating, juicing some of your greens and maybe celery is a totally valid and wonderful way to get in your greens.

I eat my bee pollen alone. It might taste strange if you've never had it before - that's normal. I've written a bit on bee pollen earlier in the blog, but I want to reiterate that LOCAL, fresh pollen is ideal as opposed to pollen coming from somewhere else and sitting for longer. They are truly different foods. I have gotten 'the best' organic bee pollen from New Zealand before and it is NOTHING compared to the fresh Arizona bee pollen I get often within a week or two of harvesting. I don't even consider local bee pollen and non local bee pollen to be the same food. HOWEVER, all bee pollen has amazing benefits and if you don't have access to local, it's ok!

You are talking about dropping sizes so was wondering if I can ask you a question about weight and juice feasting. Last I weighed in at the doctor, I was 130 lbs at 5ft 8 (I'm female btw), my normal weight. I have feasted for 4 days and even though I do not have a scale at home, I and others have noticed that I am close to looking like skeletor. I drank 6 quarts of juice, half of them pure green juices made from celery and dandelion, the others from bell pepper, carrot and oranges. The orange juice, of which I drank 2-3 quarts gave me horrible sour stomach and I don't think I want to drink it again ever :) But anyways, I seem to dissolve into thin air on only juice. Which I don't if I eat the fruits and vegetables raw as they are. Though I do work out a lot, I have not worked out or burned extra calories during those days.
Is there some initial weight loss through loss of retained water that stops after a few days or what might be going on?

First of all, most people will lose a bit of weight on a Juice Feast. This is ok - you can lose as much as 10% of your body weight and be ok. If you are juice feasting properly, your body will only lose toxic weight, and then it will begin to build back up again. To avoid losing too much weight, you definitely need to be getting in all your leafy greens, and it would be a great idea to up your intake of green powders and algaes as well. You'll also want to be drinking a lot of juice - 6 quarts, like you're doing, is great. If you are doing all these things, and you've lost more than 10% and your weight doesn't seem to be coming back on after a while or you're continuing to lose weight, then you may consider breaking the feast. You may not need to do a full 92 day juice feast or any long length.

How the hay do you you squeeze 2lbs of greens and a head of celery into 1 quart/4 cups of juice?? My 1 lb. of greens and 3/4 head of celery made almost 3 quarts! Do I just put too much water in with my greens? Thanks for answering my question again :o)

Haha, well, if you've seen I've only gotten 1 quart of 'green juice' in one particular day, then I probably haven't had quite the total greens. I tend to take closer to 1 lb of greens in per day than 2 lbs, it is a matter of accessibility for me, but get as close to 2 lbs as you can. As far as water, I usually put in about 3/4 - 1 cup of water in with a full vitamix of greens.

Day 57 Juice Feast

Yes, folks, upcoming is the EPIC Global Juice Feast 2008!! I'm announcing this to my readers now so you can all start thinking about whether you might be interested in joining us! People from all around the world, including David and Katrina Rainoshek (who will be doing 92 Days) are going to be juicing it up together and transforming their health, lives, and the world! It will start in March of 2008, right about springtime, which an AWESOME time to be cleaning house, and a time for new beginnings and new life. This could be your chance to really take action to that health, body, life and world you've dreamed of, and the support and fellowship of other feasters during this event will be precious. I won't be doing another long juice feast then, but I WILL be joining in on at least the first week and the last week of the Global Juice Feast. You may want to join David and Katrina and other feasters on a full 92 Day Feast, but if you just want to scope it out, feel free to join for part of it, and I'd love for anyone who wants to do something shorter to join me on my shorter feast. It is going to be amazing!

Today's Feast, in order of consumption:

1 tsp each of agaricus, reishi, coriolus and cordyceps in 1 cup water
20 oz. green juice w/ ginger and lemon
3 TBS bee pollen
12 oz. green juice w/ ginger and lemon
36 oz. orange juice w/ 1/4 TBS MSM
16 oz. coconut water
40 oz. honeydew/persimmon/apple/orange juice

I just wanted to give everyone a little reminder as far as the KINDS of juices you need to do on the Juice Feast. TWO pounds of leafy greens and ONE head of celery need to be juiced every day if you can. I've seen people who have attempted juice feasts and not done these two very important things, and they just don't seem to last, or they get very imbalanced. I have always gotten all the celery in per day and usually get the greens in as well - it makes the HUGEST difference in every aspect when I do - hunger, feeling balanced and satisfied physically and being centered emotionally. Keep in mind that if someone is diabetic, they need to do a purely green juice feast - zero fruit juices whatsoever. One of the reasons we suggest taking the fasting blood sugar before starting your feast is to give insight into how much fruit juice is appropriate for you. Someone with no blood sugar problem (I don't have a blood sugar problem)can do more fruit juice. Maximize on that chlorophyll-y goodness.

Lastly, the Rainoshek's are offering a chance for someone to win a free 30 day membership to the Juice Feasting membership website! Your recipe just might make it on the eternal Juice of the Day feature on the Juice Feasting website! Please make a creative name for your juice, maybe a story about the juice (how you came up with it, or where you were when you first had it, why it is your favorite juice, etc.). Just email your recipes to nutrientdense@gmail.com with "Juice" in the subject line. Winners will be announced on David and Katrina Rainoshek's Juice Feasting Blog on Friday, December 14th.

A question from a reader:

courtney
i just got some spirulina for the first time... what's a good amount to start with in your opinion? 1 tsp per day???
LOVE love love your blog!

I'm so glad you do :) You can start with as little as you need to - 1 tsp is fine. If you don't mind the taste, do as much as you want. I do about 2 TBS of green powder every day. 1-2 TBS per day is a good dosage if you can handle the taste of it.

Love you all!

Day 56 Juice Feast

Today's Feast, in order of consumption:

1 tsp each of cordyceps, agaricus, coriolus and reishi powder in 1 cup of water
30 oz. green juice w/ a LOT of ginger juice, lemon, cayenne, turmeric and salt
3 TBS bee pollen
24 oz. honeydew/apple/orange juice w/ 1/4 TBS MSM
20 oz. green juice w/ lemon, ginger, cayenne, turmeric and salt
16 oz. coconut water
40 oz. honeydew/apple/orange juice w/ 1/4 TBS honey

Oooh the honeydew/apple/orange juice was spectacular today, how I LOVED it!!

I am officially in love with mushrooms. I think I have found the new staple of my LIFE!

This whole world of youtube videos is just SPECTACULAR, don't you think? I am just so excited. I have yet to make a video debut and get into that scene, but I think I might. Now I just have to figure out what to make a video about :D In our browsing last night, we found a few fun videos by Len Foley. We're now very excited to make our own ormus and magnetic blender! I first learned a lot about Ormus at the Best Weekend Ever back in September, what an awesome event that was! I got to speak with Peter Ragnar one on one, which was an amazing experience, he inspires me like nobody's business ;)

Well, as I've said, I haven't been weighing myself, but my pants seem to be getting more and more loose, so I'd say I'm about a pretty solid size 6 at this point, which feels really good to me - I'm about 5 feet 7.5 in height. This last week I've been noticing my face changing. I keep thinking I'm just making it up, but every time I look in the mirror I feel like my face structure is different than it ever has been - even different than it was when I used to be at this weight in high school. Tis very interesting inDEED!

Hope you all are having a joyous and flowing holiday season!!

Thought I'd leave you tonight with my favorite quote ever, which I had in my school locker as an elementary kid and still find it awesome:

"Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and good with ketchup."

Day 55 Juice Feast

Wow, today has been an incredible day for me. I've had indestructible soaring feelings of joy and gratitude, for no particular reason at all. I love that I am getting into these elation states more frequently and easily as time goes on. It's like the illusion of limitedness and sorrow is just sort of transparent and I can feel and see through to the effortless joy and diversity and abundance that is always there waiting for us to see its gold lining on every thing and experience. Sorry if that was a bit sappy, it's a poetic sort of day :D

Today's Feast, in order of consumption:

22 oz. collard/apple juice w/ 2 TBS Nature's First Food
32 oz. green juice w/ lemon, ginger, cayenne and turmeric
2 TBS bee pollen
24 oz. orange/grapefruit juice
22 oz. grapefruit juice

A wonderful video was put together by a diabetic guest here at the Tree of Life, a very nice man whom I worked with for several months before he came out for his program. Check out his video below:

Mmm today I did a shot of medicinal mushroom powders! My boyfriend Thim is absolutely an expert on the amazing properties of these mushrooms and is getting me enthusiastic too, so I finally tried it this morning! Basically I took about a teaspoon each of reishi, astralagus, cordyceps and coriolus in about 1/2 cup of water and just downed it. It tastes SUPER bitter, but ahh the feeling afterwards! ACTUALLY... it just occurred to me as I'm writing this that perhaps the mushrooms have to do with my amazing state of elation and overjoyment today.... This could be an interesting experiment!! Thim wrote a little post on these powerful mushrooms on his blog, which can be viewed by clicking here.

I did a wonderful workout today with some light weights. It feels so good to be back to a body size that feels comfortable to me, and makes all the difference in the enjoyment of moving my body. I can feel my body excitedly remembering what it is to be in really good shape - thats something I'm really excited to be moving towards!

I have confirmed indeed that Odwalla is owned by Coca-Cola. Read more at the following links:

A question from a reader:

Do you have any advice on coping with celery and green juice... I'm having a hard time aquiring my taste for them...

Hmm, well, this is not something I've dealt with, as I love both, but there are different things you can do. First, you could just combine things with fruit, perhaps fruits with very strong tastes, such as pinneapple. Coconut water makes a great combination with green juice. You could also just use the get-it-over-with approach in which you cna just down it all first thing in the morning, all at once. Get all your celery and greens done with, even if you have to hold your nose while drinking it. Another likely thing is that your taste buds could change and you could find that not only do you like the taste of these juices, you might even start to crave them! On this feast, I have never, ever craved fats or sweets. I have no interest in raw desserts whatsoever. But someone who walks by with a spirulina salad literally makes me salivate. The thought of sea veggies does it to me too. Go figure!

Love always!

Day 54 Juice Feast

Oooh, I've been having so much fun on this delightful new community that Dhrumil has put together - www.giveittomeraw.com! So many wonderful people on this online community, and it's been super exciting for me to meet some of the people who have been following my blog. The more personal the connection, the better!!

Today's Feast, in order of consumption:

18 oz. green juice w/ lemon, ginger, turmeric, cayenne and salt
22 oz. parsley/apple juice
16 oz. apple/pear/mango juice w/ spirulina
30 oz. orange/grapefruit juice
30 oz. romaine/apple juice

Today was a good juice day!! I was very satisfied with today's juices. I've been particularly enraptured by grapefruit juice, which I haven't had much on this feast up until now. I also had my FAVORITE ever parsley today!! If any of you are considering getting me a christmas present (wink) I'll happily take a truckload or two of parsley, thanks! It's a little ridiculous and possibly annoying how much I love it, but thanks so much for bearing with me, you're all such sports ;)

So day 54 today! Back when I was sort of around day 40 or so, I SO thought 60 days would be adequate and that number felt good if I chose it. It still feels good, but now that it means only six more days of juice, I'm not so ready to be finished!! It's funny, this juice feast, because when I think of the last time I ate a full meal, it seems like a gargantuan amount of time, but at the same time I feel like I haven't been on juice that long. Wierd :O

A few questions from readers! I love answering these!!

I had two that were asking similar questions about budget:

How does it cost per day to be on juice feast? For me, eating 15-20 pounds juiced vegetables per day mean a lot of money! Can you tell me more about a typical budget we need for a juice feast?
Thanks for your help! I just love your blog.

i can't wait to begin, by the way, if i don't have a budget for Organic produce, is that ok?

Hi there, great question!! Juice Feasting is estimated to cost between $10 and $15 per day in the U.S. That's pretty good! I would say that is pretty much what I have found to be consistent for me. Remember you can order bulk, you can grow some of your own stuff, etc. I could answer this question more fully, but David Rainoshek has done a great job of answering it on his site! He's provided a lot of good advice for those juicing on a budget. Just go to www.juicefeasting.com and go to the 'Frequently Asked Questions', it's listed there.

wow. another great post! i would LOVE to talk to you about eating issues. please post more of your thoughts on this topic!

Ah yes, this is quite the topic. I've learned SO much in everything related to this topic in the past four years I've spent recovering and healing myself. Sometimes I feel like I could write a book about it (Maybe I will :P) I've sort of touched on my story with eating disorders in my post 'The Beginning of the Beginning', but in a nutshell, about four years ago I had undiagnosed anorexia, and soon after went to the other extreme with Binge Eating Disorder (undiagnosed). I've been as small as a size 2 and as large as a size 14-16. In my deep spiritual, emotional, mental and physical exploration to heal this, I have grown infinitely. The disorders have been the greatest blessing in my life, driving me further and further inward. The disorders are the reason for every aspect of my life and my mission now. I am by no means done healing, but I no longer have any of these behavioral symptoms.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, around 11 millions americans have symptoms of eating disorders. If we start talking about the rest of the world, and then perhaps extend our conversation to include people who don't necessarily have eating disorders, but have some sort of food addiction, we're talking about a substantial part of the world's population. In my personal experience and opinion, eating disorders and food addictions are mostly about much deeper seated imbalances in our spiritual and emotional health and about what food represents and symbolizes for us - they are really not about food. The behavior with food is simply the byproduct of the imbalance, and the roots of the imbalance are different for everyone. Food can be a comfort to us, it can be a filler for the space we're afraid to be alone in, it can be a distancer from the things we are afraid to deal with. We may associate losing whatever aspects of our lives that we associate with certain foods, or simply have an great fixation on the way our physical bodies look and so seek control via our food intake. It can be any number of infinite possibilities, and likely a combination. It has been a combination for me, but I have learned to love this wonderful indicator I am blessed to have. If I ever notice I am having an imbalanced experience with food that feels anything other than natural, unattached, loving and balanced, then I know immediately that there is some inward work I need to do. I am grateful for this perfect indicator of how aligned or misaligned I am with the truth of who I am, and the healthy relationship I want to have with food and all aspects of my life.

So thats a little bit of a blurb, hope it gives some insight!

In love and balance,

Courtney

Day 53 Juice Feast

Aahhh it feels so great to be back home in Arizona! Every time I leave I return with a newfound appreciation of what it is to be in a likeminded, supportive community that I am so grateful to have here!

Today's Feast, in order of consumption:

32 oz. Odwalla "Superfood" Juice
32 oz. Odwalla "Superfood" Juice
28 oz. green juice w/ lemon and ginger

EEeek my body feels SO wierd to have the Odwalla's. Having recently found out the possible truth that Odwalla is owned by Coca Cola, I'm even more hesitant to drink them. But I guess you have to do what you have to do when you're traveling!

I was reflecting today on how mild my Juice Feast has been physically. I have had very few physical detox symptoms or strange bodily feelings, it has gone wonderfully smooth and I feel better and better each and every day! This very smooth, enjoyable and ever elevating physical experience I have had thus far could be attributable to several things. It may just be that this is a FEAST, not a fast, and the amount of nutrition and calories are so satisfactory to my system. It could be that I haven't been to the depths of my potential healing and detox, which I may or may not get to in this Juice Feast - perhaps in the next one I do. It also could be due to the AIM program, which since I have been on I have not been really sick or ill or physically off at all. Any which way, I'm rather delighted that its been this way. It's definitely been more emotionally and spiritually intense for me, as you can see if you've been joining me via this blog. Funny how its the opposite that I thought - physically a peice of cake (raw, that is ;) and intense in other ways.

A question from a reader:

how did you get here? In this world of raw-living foods? How and when do you make the switch -- someone on the path would like to know. :)

Hi there, I actually posted about this in my blog "The Beginning of the Beginning" in October. I'd be happy to elaborate if you have any further questions, however :)

Day 52 Juice Feast

This morning I woke up to a Winter Wonderland which blew the 'winter wonderland' I arrived here to OUT OF THE WATER! See pics above, it was SO magical, I don't even know if I've ever seen the amazing amount of snow that stayed so long on each twig and branch... I definitely savored it as I don't know when the next time is that I'll see such snow!!

Today's Feast, in order of consumption:
32 oz. orange juice w/ 1/2 TBS MSM
24 oz. pear/apple juice
10 oz. pear/apple juice
20 oz. green leaf lettuce/apple juice

Yikes, definitely didn't get my 1 gallon in today... part of the issue is that my juicer really isn't that great - its leaving my pulp super wet and so I'm not getting much juice out of my produce. I have a new appreciation for my Vitamix. I just don't think you can really beat the vitamix-nut mylk bag scenario for making juice. If you are traveling somewhere on your juice feast, either make sure you have a large, super good blender where you're going or you have a really really good juicer!

Thought I'd put the three pictures thus far next to eachother for comparison (Day 1, Day 27 and Day 50). Blogger doesn't seem to be cooperating with me to post the pictures side by side, but the bottom picture is Day 1, the top left is Day 27, and the top right was this last wednesday, Day 50. It even amazes me how different I look because I just don't experience it in a drastic way...

A question from a reader:

You INSPIRE me! may i ask if you have a good book about juice feasting for health , and what are some other protein sources besides bee pollen that you take? also besides odwalla juice, is there any other options for on the go emergency use? like small packet ones thanks! Nat

Nat, there isn't really a full blown book out there on Juice Feasting YET, but as I've mentioned before, keep an eye out for David Rainoshek's new book on Juice Feasting! You can read more about it by going to his website, http://www.juicefeasting.com/.

Protein! Our most favorite subject of all :) Well, the main sources of protein on the Juice Feast are your leafy green juices, green superfood powders, algaes and your bee pollen. If you're juicing your two pounds of leafy greens per day, having a few tablespoons of green superfood powder (Vitamineral Green, Nature's First Food, Pure Synergy), algae (spirulina, chlorella, E3 Live) and eating about a tablespoon of bee pollen per day, you're going to get all the protein you need. In fact, you are likely getting more protein than you ever have before in your life. Bee pollen, as an example, contains an estimated 5-7 times more protein than meat, eggs or cheese, gram for gram.

I don't know of any other good measures for on the go juice aside from when you have to do the Odwalla. Sometimes I'll use that time of day when I don't have access to fresh juice to eat my bee pollen (although, as you can see, its been a while since I had any), and you can also use this time to simply combine your green powders with water and drink that mix straight. Most importantly, just keep hydrated - if you can't drink juice, drink a lot of water. Just FYI, Odwalla seems to be the best in regards to pasteurized juices.

In deep appreciation for all of your support,

Courtney

Day 51 Juice Feast

Wow, this has sure been a strange week for me... Not sure if its the recognition of how different I am since the last time I was home, or what, but interesting indeed. I feel a little off balance and am rather excited to get back to my wonderful community, abundance of juice and warm arizona weather.

Today's Feast, in order of consumption:

30 oz. orange/grapefruit juice w/ 1/2 TBS MSM
32 oz. pear/apple/peach/mango juice
16 oz. pear/apple/peach/mango juice
30 oz. green leaf lettuce/apple juice

I have done a lot a lot a lot of emotional work today as well. Funny all this is, so much is coming up for me emotionally on this juice feast that its rather surprising me just how much of a basket case I feel like sometimes :) One of the most valuable things I've learned so far on this feast is that you just can't put expectations on how you think your feast will go. Mine is turning out as different as it could possibly get from how I expected it to be. I expected to have an smooth, perfect, zero mistake juice feast with little change in how I felt emotionally and spiritually. Well, not quite :) It's actually a been a whole process for me to accept that this juice feast has not been perfect as I had told myself it must be. However, I'm not sure why I thought I wouldn't be going through something this powerful - I come from a history of food addiction and disorder.

The other wonderful thing that this feast is inspiring within me is a newfound enthusiasm and dedication to helping others with food addictions/disorders to break free of their patterns and heal whatever underlying needs to be healed. This juice feast allows one to really get into the space to see with clarity what the issues behind their food attachments are. The more I speak with people (of all degrees of health and well being and dietary choices), the more I am amazed at how many more of us deal with some degree of food addiction and attachment than we would ever guess. I was looking at the National Eating Disorders Association, and I was reading that more than 11 million Americans display symptoms of eating disorders. I'd guess there's probably more, but just think of that number - 11 million. That is quite an indication of what might be going on in our society. In my opinion and experience, eating disorders are really not about food at all (although I do definitley recognize that other substances as well as lifestyle choices contribute) - many eating disorders are the result of a serious emotional and spiritual imbalance. It is definitely a passion of mine to share my experience with healing eating disorders through natural health, energetic work, raw food and juice feasting, and other modalities.

A question from a reader:

I have been reading your blog for a few weeks, and have been truly touched by your sharing of experiences. Currently, I am on Day 9 of a green juice feast, and continue to feel stronger than the day before. This is my second cleanse this year (the first lasted 12 days), and currently there is no foreseeable end for me...thank goodness! (92 is the goal, of course!) One HUGE concern: I have yet to administer an enema by myself, and am somewhat hesistant. I do have a weekly colonic therapy session, but instinct is telling me I should be doing more. Do you reccomend any particular brand, frequency and/or method? Any insight would be most appreciated. Anyways, thanks for simply being available. You are very much an inspiration. I look forward to hearing from you.

Congratulations on the start of your feast, what a wonderful journey it will be! Yes, you should be doing more as far as colon cleansing than one colonic per week. Colonics get out more than enemas, so its great if you can still do that one colonic per week. However, you are eliminating stuff from your body via your colon daily, and so we juice feast coaches recommend that for the first two weeks of the feast, you need to do at least one enema daily. After two weeks, you can do them as you feel, although we still recommend you do them every other day, if possible. Enema kits are pretty generic, for the msot part. They cost between $10 and $15. You should use coconut oil or sesame oil for lubricant. Here is a great video on how to do an enema! Trust me, they seem a lot stranger and scarier than they are:

Hope that helps!

Yours in life change excitement,

Courtney

Day 50 Juice Feast

Ahh, the joy of an aligned spinal column and newly cut hair! Yesterday I had a chiropractor appointment, which felt AMAZING. The chiropractor is the only doctor I've been to in years, and I've actually been getting a regular adjustment (once per month at least) for probably 10 years. I absolutely love how I feel after them - a little like gumby. Everything feels so free flowing, aligned, and energized in my spine.

Today I got a haircut, which was badly needed :) I have super thick hair so I get it thinned out a little bit, that way its not so heavy. The pile of hair she cut off was massive, and to think barely any of it came from cutting any length off. My hair has definitely gotten shinier and stronger since I started this juice feast, no doubt.

Today's Feast, in order of consumption:

32 oz. orange/grapefruit juice w/ 1/2 TBS MSM
16 oz. pomegranate/apple/strawberry/blueberry juice
16 oz. orange/grapefruit juice

16 oz. apple/peach/mango/strawberry juice w/ spirulina

16 oz. green leaf lettuce/pear juice

16 oz. apple/peach/mango/strawberry juice w/ spirulina

I think I'm going to have to start getting some leafy green juice from Wild Oats... I've given up the pathetic blender I was using here and pulled out my old Jack LaLanne juicer, which is great for fruits, terrible for greens. I got a huge bunch of parsley yesterday and my LaLanne pushed out a whopping two ounces of parsley juice from it. Rejuicing the pulp proved to be a futile endeavor. Hmm....

Wow, day 50 today!! Amazing. So depending on how long I choose to go, I could have anywhere between 10 and 42 more days of Juice Feasting! I'm really ok with whatever length I go - this has been an amazing journey no matter what and it is only the first of many, many juice feasts for me!

David Rain asked me today if I was having more vivid dreams. Funny he should say that, because I ABSOLUTELY have. Especially this past week, never in my life have I had such detailed, vivid, complex dreams so easily remembered as now. David suggested I look into lucid dreaming - it seems that some combination of the physical cleanliness I have reached plus the pairing subtle energy awakening may have given way to these heightened dream experiences.

I'll keep you updated on that for sure, I've always been interested in lucid dreaming...

Day 49 Juice Feast

Ahh, twas a nice stay-at-home day indeed! I'm having trouble getting in my whole gallon, I didn't realize just how much PRODUCE I'd need! I've been getting juice from the cafe and now that I don't have that, I'm rather flabbergasted at the amount of produce one needs.. well, all the more nutrition!!

I read a whole book today :) 'The Astonishing Power of Emotions' by Abraham-Hicks. It was very good, and I feel very happy and 'in alignment' after having read it. I really love all the Abraham teachings, and have been following them for a good year and a half now.

Today's Feast, in order of consumption:

32 oz. apple/pear/strawberry juice w/ spirulina
16 oz. blackberry/blueberry juice
24 oz. celery/green leaf lettuce/pear juice w/ 1/2 TBS Nature's First Food
34 oz. romaine/celery/apple juice w/ 1/2 TBS MSM

A question from a reader:

Hello, I love your blog and follow you on twitter as well. I am brand new to raw foods and need to lose alot of weight. I was wondering about your 32oz of orange juice. Do you peel the oranges then add them to the vitamix or do you use a citrus juicer to juice them? I eat clemintines or oranges every few days but orange juice sounds divine. One of those I crave sometimes. Thank you for your blog and good luck on your feasting.

Well, welcome to the raw food world! I do peel the oranges before I blend them using my vitamix. The orange juice IS divine, and the past few days I've become very enamored with orange/grapefruit juice. I hope I remembered to record those... either way, there is definitely something wonderful about citrus! For those of you not familiar with twitter, you can sign up here: www.twitter.com.

Day 48 Juice Feast

Wow, so I almost didn't notice that yesterday was my one year anniversary of being totally raw vegan! I have now officially been pretty close to all raw for a whole year. What an amazing standpoint to be at. I tried to go raw for so long, it seemed like such a distant and unimaginable future where I'd find myself saying I'd done this for a year, wow!! There are so many gifts that come with living and nourishing oneself this way, not to mention the absolute treasures of people I have met on the course of the journey!

Today's Feast, in order of consumption:

32 oz. green leaf lettuce/celery/apple juice w/ 1/2 TBS Nature's First Food
16 oz. pomegranate/blueberry/grape/apple juice
32 oz. green leaf lettuce/celery/pear juice
16 oz. apple/pear/mango/strawberry juice w/ spirulina
16 oz. pinneapple/dandelion juice
12 oz. pinneapple/orange juice w/ 1/4 TBS MSM

Today was a day at home, I took a nap for the first time in FOREVER, that felt really nice. Yesterday I did a workout with weights for the first time in a long time, which felt really wonderful as well - and I'm sore today! The old four hour a day swimmer would laugh at my pathetic ism, but hey, that's how it goes :) The desire within me to get in shape is stronger than ever and I am really excited for that journey! I always have this itch that bothers me knowing that I'm doing so many wonderful things for my body with diet and supplements, but not exercising regularly. As a former athlete, I know the importance of physical activity and I know the amazing feeling it brings to have a strong, fit body. Diet is only part of the equation, and in some cases, my feeling is that regular exercise may even be more important!

Day 47 Juice Feast

A wonderful, wonderful day today has been. I love being back in a winter wonderland - everything feels so holiday-ish, I went with my family to get a christmas tree and we decorated the house. I've been a picture fiend since I got here, taking pictures of all the snowy wonder! The first pic is my lovely doggie :) and a pic of the beautiful mountains in this area!! I went to bed at 9:00 last night, and it felt SO GOOD. Getting to sleep early is such a treasure for me... then I woke up and did some exercise, felt so great!

I don't have a vitamix here so I'm using another blender. It's not nearly as good, but it works, it just takes twice as long to blend everything as well before I strain it. I have a newfound appreciation for vitamixes, THAT'S for sure.

Once again, it's crazy for me to be sort of back in the 'real world'... I accompanied my fam to the grocery store today, it's just amazing the kind of junk people are buying and eating. It also saddens me, somewhat, knowing what I know, and knowing that if we don't change the way we eat and live very soon, these people may realize the importance of their choices and it will be too late. By the 'too late' part I'm talking about the environment and the health of the earth. Luckily, our bodies can reverse their conditions from sick to healthy remarkably well if we give them the right conditions, but the earth is not going to be so easy to fix. If people could just make a few changes in their lifestyles, and keep them on a consistent basis, we could do wonders for the healing of the planet.

Today's Feast, in order of consumption:

32 oz. orange juice
32 oz. pear/apple/pinneapple/spirulina juice
16 oz. pear/apple/berry/spirulina juice
32 oz. apple/peach/mango/strawberry/spirulina juice
I have to get into the Juice Feasting groove here in the way of getting all my produce, making time and the whole blender thing, so my juice today was a little off as well - I'd like to call it 'wonky' - but still juicy nonetheless! NEEEEEEED GREEEEEEEEENS!!!!
Today is day 47, wow! I've decided to definitely take my Juice Feast to 60 days, and then see how I feel from there. Perhaps I will go longer, perhaps not. We shall see!

Day 46 Juice Feast

Wow, traveling is sure a strange experience for me. Since I live in such a small, secluded community in the middle of nowhere, its almost eerie and wierd and somewhat alien for me to go back into 'the real world.' After I've been at the Tree for a long time, maybe several months, and go back out and people are ordering chicken bacon sandwiches, it trips me out! It's like, "Wait.... people still... eat processed food?" Not everyone KNOWS about stuff like Juice Feasting and raw food!?!? Oh, thats right... no, they don't. Yet.

It's interesting to see the things that are popping up in places - Odwalla juices are now in airports (I was in one all day so thats why I had a lot of that today in place of fresh juice), 'The Secret' book by Rhonda Byrne is in airport bookstores, and Cosmopolitan features an article on why being 'in the moment, and present' while making love is key. The shift is happening, folks...

Today's Feast, in order of consumption:

24 oz. spinach/apple juice
32 oz. orange juice w/ 1 TBS Nature's First Food
32 oz. 'green superfood' odwalla juice
3 TBS bee pollen
32 oz. 'green superfood' odwalla juice

It felt wierd to my body to have that much non fresh juice today, but it happens sometimes... I'm looking forward to getting up tomorrow and making a huge amount of greeeeeeeeeeeeeeen juice!!!
It's snowing and a winter wonderland here in UT!!!
